Training & Safety

The mission of the Training Division is to provide quality training programs which promote safety, enhance competence, and develop professionalism for Birmingham Fire and Rescue employees. A secondary focus of the Training Division is to ensure “battle readiness”. This is accomplished by providing field supervisors with performance objectives and National Fire Protection Administration NFPA job performance standards. Field supervisors are tasked with evaluating firefighters’ performance against recognized national standards.

In addition to teaching BFRS employees, the Training Staff conducts CPR, First Aid, and Emergency Care Provider courses to local coaches, police officers, jailors, nurses, and Public Works employees. The Training Division will remain vigilant in and providing training, education, and professional development opportunities which positively impact the safety, health, and well-being of those we serve, our fellow City employees, and BFRS personnel.

The mission of the Safety Division is to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of all BFRS personnel. This is accomplished by ensuring compliance with the annual Fit Check, Job Task, medical screenings, investigation of accidents and injuries, yearly testing of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA’s), SCBA face-pieces, compressors, and other related equipment.

Safety Officers work 24-hour shifts and respond to all types of calls for service with the purpose of providing resilience through the incident command system while fulfilling their role as incident safety officers.
